20 people arrested in Luapula province for illegal mining of suspected Sugilite

October 4, 2023-Police in Mansa of Luapula Province carried out an operation after receiving intelligence information and apprehended 20 people in relation to illegal mining of suspected Sugilite ore.

A tipper truck carrying suspected Sugilite mineral ore, a Toyota Hilux motor vehicle, six motor bikes, a low bed loader truck and an excavator have been impounded and parked at Luapula Division Headquarters in Mansa.

The convoy was coming from Catros Mine in Butute area loaded with suspected Sugilite mineral ore heading to Mansa town. This occurred on October 3, 2023 between 17:00 hours and 22:00 hours. Investigations into the matter have been instituted.

This followed after Police swiftly swung into action and started heading to the exit route off Chembe – Mansa road. After covering a distance of about eight kilometers from Mansa – Milambo turn off, Police saw a lot of riders on motor bikes carrying more than one Pillion on their motorbikes. Behind the motorbikes was a tipper truck moving registration number BCC 8178 belonging to S and K Investments Company followed by a Toyota Hilux registration number ASB 2955 which was carrying a lot of people and behind the Toyota Hilux were a lot of motorbikes all were escorting the loaded tipper truck which was put on the middle.

Police stopped the convoy and some riders were caught and six motorbikes were impounded. However, other riders managed to U-turned and escaped from the scene including the driver of the Toyota Hilux and all the passengers abandoned the Toyota Hilux.

Later on Police came to know the driver of the tipper truck as Peter Mulopa aged 44 of House number 117 Suburbs compound in Mansa who said that the estimated tonnage of the material he was carrying was about 16 tons.

Brief facts of the matter are that on September 30, 2023, Jones other names not known hired an excavator from an Indian National, Poddutuni Sninivas Reddy aged 45 of Musenga Site and Service in Mansa and further approached the person who owns a Low Bed truck Joseph Ngosa aged 31 of Chabalamuwe compound in Mansa and hired his Howo Low Bed truck Horse registration number AID 1828 ZM Trailer Registration number AID 1827 ZM.

The Driver of the Low Bed truck Faleck Sinkala aged 35 of Senama in Mansa conveyed the excavator to Catros mine in Butute area.

On October 1 and 2,2023, water was pumped out of the point where suspected Sugilite mineral ore is mined and they called for a tipper truck and on October 3, 2023, they blasted the rocks using explosives and later the excavator loaded the minerals in the tipper truck and the owner of the excavator went to hire a Low Bed truck from Mansa which went to Butute area at the mining site and they loaded it on the Low Bed and started off for Mansa and later in the evening, Motor Bike riders and a Toyota Hilux started escorting the tipper truck to Mansa up to where they were intercepted by the Police.
Police have since detained the owner of the Howo Low Bed truck, his driver, the owner of the excavator, the excavator machine operator Mathews Miti aged 40, and the following riders and their Pillions; (1) Mwandwe Bernard aged 51, (2) M/Juvenile aged 18, (3) Chiwila Mathews aged 41, (4) Emmanuel Mwansa aged 29, (5) Bright Kalenga aged 30, (6) Christopher Ng’andwe aged 31, (7) Kunda Major aged 40, (8) Joseph Kalombe aged 27, (9) Collins Kapisha aged 29, (10) Morris Chongo aged 30, (11) Evans Ng’onga Eaged 42, (12) Amos Kabengele aged 40, (13) William Kasongo aged 34, (14) Joseph Kalombe, (15) Bornface Mukangwa aged 50, and (16) Kanyanta Kalunde making a total number of all Suspects apprehended so far to be 20.
