A 26-year old woman of Dam View Compound in Chipata district, Eastern province has drowned alongside her 5-year-old daughter in the Apollo Dam 1 in Chipata.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has identified the deceased as Loveness Phiri and Rachael Nkosi her daughter.

He says brief facts of the matter are that the deceased left home on Saturday, 12th July, 2025 at around 17:00 hours, along with her 5-year-old daughter, now deceased, for an unknown destination leaving her mobile phone at home and never returned home.

Mr Mweemba says a search was made by family members on Sunday, 13th July, 2025, but to no avail.

He said the two bodies were only found by Eastern Water and Sanitation Company workers who were carrying out some routine work at the dam and later informed the police.

Mr Mweemba said that the bodies were retrieved by Fire Fighters and were deposited in the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial as no foul play was suspected.

He said a preliminary inquiry conducted with relatives indicated that she had been complaining about her supervisor not treating her well at her place of work indicating that this may have triggered her to take her own life and that of her daughter.
