THREE people have been arrested in Mansa, Luapula Province, for allegedly trespassing at Katros Mine Limited, where they illegally blasted an ore and went away with some minerals suspected to be sugilite.
Police deputy public relations officer Danny Mwale named the suspects as Nelson Kalembwe, 43, of Nchelenge, Zebedi Lukwesa, 39, of Chilanga, and Morton Sikazwe, 31, of Mansa.
Mr Mwale said the trio were allegedly found in possession of the suspected mineral ore on Monday at a lodge in Mansa.
He said the suspects were nabbed after police received a tip-off.
“They are also alleged to have trespassed on Katros Mine Limited, where they blasted and picked some minerals suspected to be sugilite around 20:00 hours on July 2 [Sunday].
“The suspected mineral ore has since been handed over to the Ministry of Mines for laboratory tests,” Mr Mwale said.
He said all the three suspects are in police custody and are yet to be formally charged.
Sugilite is a rare mineral and a gemstone best known for its vibrant pink to purple colours.
