The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has reported that 48 out of the 123 paternity tests conducted by the National Forensic Science and Biometrics Department’s Forensic DNA Laboratory returned negative, while 75 were positive.

Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Principal Public Relations Officer MWALA KALALUKA confirmed that these tests were carried out in 2025.

Mr. KALALUKA explained that the results underscore the vital role of DNA evidence in resolving family, humanitarian, and civil disputes.

In an interview with ZNBC news, he added that the department handled a total of 450 cases in 2025, 303 of which were criminal.

Mr. KALALUKA stated that 267 of the cases, or 88%, were related to sexual offences, while 36, making up 12%, involved non-sexual offences.

He noted that the department’s primary focus remains addressing sexual and gender-based violence through DNA analysis to bring closure to these cases.
