A total of 49 pupils and two teachers from Sinafala Zone in Gwembe District have been involved in a road traffic accident while returning from inter-zone games held at Gwembe Day Secondary School.

Sinafala Zonal Head Teacher Entwell Chikuni confirmed the incident to BYTA FM, stating that the accident happened on Monday between 17:00 and 18:00 hours at an area known as 17 Corners, along the Gwembe–Chipepo Road.

Chikuni explained that following the accident, all the pupils were rushed to Munyumbwe Level One Hospital for medical attention.

He said the accident is believed to have occurred after the driver of the vehicle, a canter truck, allegedly lost control. The truck is reportedly owned by Kebby Nakaloba of the Kkoma area in Gwembe District.

Chikuni further revealed that four pupils—three boys and one girl—sustained serious injuries, while the remaining pupils suffered minor injuries.

He added that the truck had initially been arranged to carry 33 pupils, but more pupils allegedly boarded the vehicle without the knowledge of the teachers.

By press time, 45 pupils had been treated and discharged after sustaining minor injuries, while the four pupils with serious injuries remained admitted to hospital.

Chikuni expressed hope that all the injured pupils will fully recover.

Meanwhile, police are yet to issue an official statement regarding the accident.
