A joint team from the Zambia Police and Chikankata Council has exhumed the body of a five-year old boy, Ermerson Mweemba, who died on December 28, 2024.

The exhumation followed a court order permitting the process, which took place in the Mwanamainda area of Nansenga Ward, Chikankata District.

Concerns were raised by some family members after it was revealed that the child had reportedly been buried with coins placed in his hands, a practice they deemed inappropriate. The act sparked tensions within the family, with some accusing a close relative of performing the ritual without the consent of others.

However, the woman accused of placing the coins has since removed the two one kwacha coins from the boy’s hands after the body was exhumed.

And during an interview, the suspect only identified as Luciya Lumina aged 60 years, said the whole purpose of putting coins in the hands of the deceased was to make the him not to be used in any rituals by suspected witches as he was found in a strange way after the body was retrieved from the stream where he drowned.
