Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol (CAIA) has disclosed that about 70% of alcohol being consumed in Zambia is illicit and a source of concern.

And the coalition has described the situation as a serious health hazard which needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

Addressing the media in Lusaka, Friday evening, CAIA co – chairperson Christopher Kalila says the fight against illicit alcohol consumption requires a muiltisectoral approach.

Dr Kaili stated that the consumption of illicit alcohol commonly known as “junta” and other related drinks is a public health issue.

Reports indicate that in the last two months, about 70 persons are reportedly to have died from consumption of illicit alcohol countrywide.

“The impact of illicit alcohol in our nation is profound. Alarmingly, 70 % of all alcohol being consumed in Zambia is illicit. This not only endangers the health of our citizens, but also represents a substantial loss in revenue to the government which would otherwise have been invested in essential public services and development projects” Dr Kalila said.

Speaking at the same event, Zambian Breweries county director Thais Cavinatto says there is need to have more initiatives aimed at promoting responsible drinking habits, as well as those aimed at reducing harmful alcohol use in the country.

Cavinatto pledged ZBs commitment to producing and promoting high quality legal beverages that contributes positively to society.

Cavinatto said the issue of having 70 % of illicit alcohol being consumed is pressing.

“It not only poses serious health risks but also undermines the economic and social fabric of our nation,” Cavinatto added.
