A road traffic accident has claimed the lives of eight people following an accident that occurred this morning, around 09:00 hours at Kasenga rail crossing in Mpika district.
The accident involved a Tazara train, driven by Daniel Bwalya, and a Toyota Noah minibus with the registration number BCB 9391 which was driven by Enock Daka.
It is reported that the train was reportedly traveling from Mpika towards Serenje when it collided with the minibus, leading to a devastating loss of life.
According to Zambia police assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, the bus was carrying a group of 13 people from Lumbatwa Village traveling to Mpika Central Business District when the accident occurred.
Investigations into the incident suggest that the minibus failed to yield at a rail crossing, resulting in a catastrophic collision with the oncoming train.
Chilabi revealed that the devastating impact of the crash claimed the lives of seven people, including five adults and two children, who were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
He said the remaining six individuals, consisting of five adults and one child, were rushed to Chilonga Mission Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
However, one died after admission.
“The driver of the ill-fated minibus has been identified as the driver responsible for the tragic accident,” Chilabi revealed.
He added that the bodies of the deceased were then deposited to Chilonga Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
