LUSAKA – U.S. Embassy Zambia held its fourth EducationUSA “boot camp” last week. EducationUSA Scholars, a cohort of 42 talented young Zambians aspiring to study at universities in the United States, spent the week learning about U.S. universities and admission processes, and building skills in leadership, technology, and communication. In addition to year-long educational counselling and support, the EducationUSA program funds the application, test, and visa fees of over 40 low-income students aspiring to study at universities in the United States annually, leading to numerous admissions success stories.

U.S. Embassy Zambia Chargé d’Affaires Martin Dale met with the scholars and congratulated them on their selection for the program. Throughout the week, U.S. Embassy personnel, U.S. Marines, and previous EducationUSA scholars provided coaching and training to the students.

At the end of April, 14 aspiring graduate students will take part in a four-day program to prepare for graduate study in the United States.

More than 700 students applied to join the highly competitive Scholars program this year. The remaining candidates who were not selected are invited to participate in year-round workshops and individual advising sessions to prepare for study in the United States.

More than 400 Zambian students study in the United States each year, and more than 90 percent of EducationUSA Zambia Scholars receive acceptance to one or more U.S. universities at the end of their application process. EducationUSA Zambia Scholars have attended top U.S. universities including the University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, Cornell University, and Howard University.

Prospective students interested in studying in the United States can find more information at https://educationusa.state.gov/ or reach an EducationUSA Zambia advisor at lusaka@educationusa.org.
