National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) Athletes Commission Chairperson and Board Member Richard Mulenga has cautioned Zambian athletes to refrain from using any harmful substances banned in sports as they prepare for upcoming games such as the Region 5 and the Paris 2024 Olympic games.
Several athletes in Zambia are currently preparing for the 2022 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games to be hosted by Lilongwe Malawi in December and Mulenga says athletes must be wary of whatever substances they consume to avoid having their careers ruined.
Mulenga says the Athletes Commission in Zambia stands firm to educate athletes about the dangers of doping in sports and the usage of any other banned substances.
Meanwhile, Mulenga has implored athletes to familiarise themselves with the list of prohibited substances which was released by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) and comes into force on 1 January 2023.
Mulenga, who is a handball player says he has taken time to read the list and says it would be nice to see his fellow athletes do the same to avoid being found in a situation where they used banned substances unknowingly.
He has however urged athletes preparing for the AUSC Region 5, All Africa, and the Paris 2024 Olympic games to focus more on their training and competitions to improve their sporting skills.
