REGION 5 BOUND BOXERS IMPRESS COACH

By Noah Silomba

Two U20 Zambian boxers who recently took part in the Tanzania Women in Sport Festival in Dar es Salaam and recorded a unanimous win respectively have impressed boxing coach Ariel Banda.

The two boxers Catherine Mwape (50kg) light fly and Melody Ng’ona (48kg) Minimum weight shocked their opponents to prove to their coach that they are ready for the 2022 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games set for December in Lilongwe Malawi.

Boxing coach Ariel Banda says the performance of the two boxers [girls] in Tanzania was used to gauge how ready they are adding that they have been in a non-residential camp for close to two months.

Banda adds that apart from the Tanzania competition the two boxers and others have been also using the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge at the OYDC Zambia to prepare for major competitions such as the forthcoming Region 5 Youth Games.

He has disclosed that about eleven (11) boxers (6) girls and (5) boys will represent Zambia at the Region 5 Games. He has since paid gratitude to the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts through the Podium Performance Programme (PPP), Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF), OYDC Zambia, NOCZ and other partners making sure that boxers are well prepared for the games.
