Let’s give Yo-Maps credit!
One of the most depressing things that we face on our way up in life, is the number of times that people look at our efforts with more negativity than positivity. It can actually be painful.
I actually consider it as hate when you just point out weaknesses in someone without touching on any of their positive elements. Munthu sayipa konse.
There is one perception that is slowly changing in my view around music and art. As an artist you will not always come up with 100% concepts of your own. If you do , we’ll and good. But in most cases there is some inspiration that we draw from some existing content. The trick is on the creativity u apply to it.
In May this year Burna Boy released “Last Last” this was ahead of his album, Love, Damani. The track, produced by Chopstix has samples of Toni Braxton’s 2000 R&B hit, “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” it’s been a big song around the world. That doesn’t make him less of an artist.
Listening to Yo Maps Yo New Song, I do get the feel of a couple of songs that it leads to which could also have been inspired by a given song. But they are plenty positives to look at. I love the lyrical content, Its Rich, its on point, we can all relate to it. The Video is clean, well directed. Great works of Tivo.
What can I change on Italy thing? I think the prelude.. there was alot of talking before the actual song started what ever was being said are things we already know, he could have simply gone straight to the song or at least been brief. That Chimweka interview wasn’t necessary.
One thing for sure that we can’t take away is the fact that Yo Maps is working so hard, he’s putting in alot to be at the top of his game and the best we can do is acknowledge his efforts.
I’m one of those that still feel Yomaps needs to produce himself less and should focus on delivery, this I’ve said a couple of times. There is power in diversity.
Most important, I fully understand the pressure he has right now, but it must not push him to be releasing songs at this speed. One thing I’ve learnt over time is that some songs take time to grow in people and Maps is not giving his music enough room to grow.
Tiliko, Mr. Romantic are great pieces which could have pushed him as he tries to push his brand on the international scene.
I’m personally looking forward to the song he sampled whilst recording in SA, Sounds like a good piece.
