A 19-year-old man of Lusaka’s Kamwala South area has died after being brutally attacked on allegations that he stole a mobile phone last year.

James Milimo was attacked on Sunday, 19th February 2023 by a group of family members who ganged up and attacked him while in the company of friends as he was buying scones at a place where he is a regular.

According to an investigation conducted by Hot FM News, James was spotted by a young girl who emerged from a house and accused him of resembling the person who stole her phone.

The investigation established that it was at that point when the infuriated father in the company of family members started beating him until he lost consciousness.

Upon releasing that they had injured him, the attackers bundled him up in a vehicle and dumped him at Richard Kanchingwe Police Post, but officers advised them to take the hospital has he was reportedly in a bad state.

Mr. Milimo’s body was later discovered at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary by relatives on Monday, 20th February 2023 after a search failed to yield positive results.

And a postmortem report conducted at the University Teaching Hospital on 23rd February 2023 revealed that the deceased died after suffering a blunt impact fracture to the head and abdomen however, no arrests have been made to date.

This has left the family of the deceased disappointed with Kabwata Police’s failure to arrest his assailants. The family is dismayed that the Police only called the suspects for interrogations without detaining them and are looming the streets freely.

Nyankuluta M’hango, who is the deceased’s auntie says the conduct of officers handling the case at Kabwata Police Station has contributed to the family’s anguish as they have not shown any proactiveness in prosecuting the suspects.

Speaking to Hot FM News at the burial of the deceased on 24th February 2023, Ms. M’hango demanded the justice in matter and vowed that the family will explore all avenues that will help in bringing closure to the matter.

And Kabwata ward 6 youth chairman Dennis Hachali says the community wants to see all culprits brought to book immediately.

Meanwhile, when reached for comment, Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson Danny Mwale says police investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Mr. Mwale has pledged the police’s commitment to bring all the suspects to book.
