Chilengedwe, an organization that advocates for climate change awareness, has called on government to ban the use of single use plastic packaging, in an effort to stop the high levels of plastic pollution in the country.

Chilengedwe Lead Consultant, Cisanga Mwanza notes that laws meant to promote environmental management and sustainability are there, except that enforcement has to be enhanced, in order for them to effectively work and yield results.

She is however happy that government has started enforcing the existing environmental management laws, which will promote waste management and in turn reduce plastic pollution and plastic waste.

Speaking when she featured as guest presenter on the Red Hot Breakfast programme on Hot Fm recently, Ms. Cisanga acknowledged the prevailing political will from Republican President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema to promote environmental awareness, and expressed optimism that the ban of single use plastic packaging can be achieved.

She said the President’s vision and conscious on environmental management is clear as evidenced by the creation of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, which has galvanised the environmental management agenda.

She observed that other countries such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Kenya, the UK, and the United States, have successfully done away with single use of plastic packaging , which can equally be reciprocated and domesticated in Zambia.

“Look at the Chunga dump site, it is full of plastic waste” she said, and called for the return to the use of recyclable materials, in order to protect the environment.

And Ms. Cisanga has backed the move to remove street vendors, justifying that street vending has been, and is still illegal, and requires a mindset change and detaching of politics from issues that are meant to promote a clean and green environment.

She said laws need to be enforced accordingly so that Zambia can be a green country in order to attract tourism.
