A WEDDING involving a 14-year-old and 24-year-old father of her two-month-old baby has been stopped by a member of the royal family in Mbang’ombe chiefdom in Katete, Eastern Province.
All was set for the nuptials at Ngundamwala village on Saturday with the child bride donning a chitenge, yellow T-shirt and flip flops while the groom wore his plastic slippers and ripped jeans.
However, Betty Phiri, the daughter of Chief Mbang’ombe, stopped the wedding on instruction from her father.
This was after the bride’s aunt reported the wedding ceremony.
“Everything was done, things like food and decorations, but I said no, this marriage is not going to take place,” she said.
“The wedding was supposed to take place at 09:00 hours, and before 09:00 hours I was already there.”
Ms Phiri said in an interview yesterday that from the information gathered, the man’s family paid a cow and K1,000 to the family of the girl.
The princess, who has joined forces with her father in promoting education for all in their area and fighting early marriages and pregnancies, said the girl was in Grade 4 last year, but when she fell pregnant, her parents wanted her to get married.
Ms Phiri said the girl’s aunt, who tipped her about the wedding, was staying with her until she reached Grade 4 and fell pregnant.
After she fell pregnant, her mother demanded that she should return home, claiming that she was unwell and wanted to be cared for by her daughter.
