ALL IS SET FOR TOMORROW’S COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

Zambia will tomorrow, join the rest of the World,to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, under the theme: Invest in Girls’ Rights, Our Leadership, Our Wellbeing”.

The day is celebrated on October 11th each year, to promote girls’ empowerment and highlight the challenges they face worldwide, and also used to advocate for gender equality, access to education, and protection of girls’ rights.

Various events, discussions, and initiatives will take place to commemorate this day and raise awareness about the importance of supporting girls in all aspects of life.

And Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba Is today expected to officially launch the important day on the National Broadcaster, The Zambia National Broadcasting Coporation (ZNBC).

This year’s commemorations will be held in Mongu, Western Province, were various stakeholders are already geared to participate in various activities that have been lined up for the day.

Meanwhile, some children are happy with government’s aspirations and commitment to promote and protect their rights.

Kamwala high school Head Girl, Mirriam Phiri, who doubles as Children’s News Agency(CNA) Chairperson was accompanied by her fellow students, to meet with Ministry of Community Development and Social, Director for Child, Ms. Beatrice Muyambango, to highlight some of the issues affecting them ahead of tomorrow’s commemorations.

They discussed girl child education, early marriages, teenage pregnancies, among other topical issues, and how they can fully participate to have them effectively addressed.

With government having already put in place several interventions such as the launch of Child Participation Framework and Child Safeguarding Frameworks and also enacted the Children’s Code Act, the pupils expressed confidence that their agenda is being prioritised with such key instruments in place, coupled with a good policy framework.
