Renowned Sports Administrator and Lawyer Dickson Jere has called for protection of match officials in Zambian football following escalating incidents of violence against them.
Jere said the beating up of Referees for alleged poor officiating of football matches is worrying especially that security in most of the playing fields is not adequate.
“The barbaric behaviour must be nipped in the bud now before we lose a life,” Jere said ahead of the recent incident in which a referee was beaten in Chipata.

Jere who is also President of the New Monze Swallows FC of Southern Province said he was concerned that security is not adequate at most football fields to protect the match officials.
“We need stiff penalties to send a strong message to the culprits and their clubs. This savage behavior is uncalled for,” Jere said, adding that procedures were there on how to lodge complaints against match officials instead of violence.
Jere said mistakes within football by officials was normal and therefore players and fans should use normal channel of expressing their grievances than beating Referees.
