FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DRUG TRAFFICKING BUST: 64-YEAR-OLD APPREHENDED WITH 5.734 KGS OF COCAINE ON COPPER BELT
Lusaka, Tuesday 19th December 2023 – The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on the Copper Belt has successfully apprehended a 64-year-old British national of Tanzanian origin, identified as Semahimbo Juma Yusuph, for trafficking in over 5.734 kilograms of cocaine.

The arrest took place at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola as Mr Yusuph attempted to check in for a local flight en route to Germany via Lusaka and South Africa.

Mr Yusuph, an ex-convict in the UK, is suspected to be affiliated with an international drug cartel operating in Tanzania and Germany. Our preliminary investigations indicate that he entered the country via a Tanzanian airline and received the illicit consignment from unidentified accomplices who infiltrated the country through road transport. The carefully concealed narcotics were detected by vigilant airport staff and DEC officers during routine screening procedures.

Laboratory tests confirmed the seized substance to be cocaine, and the Commission has since issued a stern warning, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to heightened vigilance and an intensified cross-border surveillance initiative to thwart such criminal activities within the country.

The significant quantity of narcotics seized in this operation underscores the potential threats posed by drug trafficking, endangering our communities, especially considering the high value of the seized substance. Zambia’s strategic geographical location as a transit point for regional trade has made it susceptible to criminal elements seeking to exploit the situation. However, the DEC, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, remains resolute in its efforts to eradicate these vices and safeguard the nation.

The Commission acknowledges airport staff and officers’ swift and effective collaboration in successfully preventing these illicit drugs from entering our communities. We continue encouraging public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities and reaffirm its commitment to maintaining a secure environment for all citizens.
