Zambia Police in Maamba Township of Sinazongwe District has launched a man hunt for 16 people charged with various criminal offences who on Saturday escaped from lawful custody around 15 hours.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka says one of the inmates had an asthmatic attack on the material day and time which prompted the officer who was manning the shift to check on the same patient.
Daka explained that when the officer opened the cell door, inmates pushed him away and escaped from custody.
He added that currently the cells at the police station is holding more people than the carrying capacity which is a challenge.
Last year, a similar incident happened at Maamba Police Station in Sinazongwe District.
