A one year old baby of Choma’s Kabanana Compound has died after drowning in a pit latrine within the yard, Sunday afternoon.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka said that around 14 hours the mother decided to take a nap while her daughter was left playing outside the house with her friends.
Daka says, however, when the mother later woke up at 16 hours she noticed that her baby was missing.
He says the mother lizzy Himompa started searching around with the help of neighbors until she discovered her shoe on the edge of the pit latrine and upon peeping inside they spotted the baby floating.
Daka says Police together with fire brigade personnel rushed to the scene and found that the body had already been retrieved by neighbors and rushed to hospital where the baby was pronounced dead.
The body has since been deposited at Choma General Hospital Mortuary.
