High BP patient dies in Police custody
A 37-YEAR-OLD man of Lusaka’s George Compound has died under Matero Police Station custody.
According to Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, Stephen Chisanga was arrested by police after he was accused of Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm (OABH).
However on Monday night, around 21:00 hours, night shift officers at Matero received an alert from other suspects that Chisanga was experiencing convulsions.
He was removed from the cell immediately in a bid to seek for medical help but it was too late.
The shift officer later made a report to the station that Chisanga had died.
Chisanga’s body was transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) where medical professionals certified his death.
Subsequently, the body was transferred to the hospital mortuary, where it awaits postmortem examination and burial arrangements.
Hamoonga said that it was also discovered that the deceased had a history of high blood pressure.
“We assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise,” said Hamoonga while extending his condolences.
