Young Livingstone cop ends own life
TWO Gunshot sounds echoed through the quiet Friday night as officers manning the Zambia Revenue Authority Boarder post hid for cover while squinting their eyes to see what was happening.
Within seconds after the incident another shot was fired creating more panic.
A check to investigate, met the sight of a lifeless body of a police officer on the cold concrete with blood oozing.
It was 24-year-old police officer, Constable Martin Nyambe, stationed at the Victoria Falls border post. He had died by suicide yesterday.
According to a report from Livingstone police station, Constable Nyambe shot himself in the head with his AK-47 rifle sometime between 22:30 and 23:00 hours.
Police sources testified that Nyambe had been deployed to the entry gate of the ZRA border post for a shift starting at 18:00 hours on Friday ending this morning 06:00 hours.
Nyambe reportedly had dinner with a fellow officer, Constable Musonda Soko, and a security officer from the Safety Zone Security company around 22:30 hours.
Sources told Kalemba that Nyambe then grabbed both his own and Soko’s firearms and headed toward the Victoria Falls police post inquiries office.
Another officer, Constable Mubita Anamela, who was on night duty and stationed outside the inquiries office, observed this behavior and intervened.
He managed to secure Soko’s firearm and return it to him.
Despite this, Nyambe reportedly continued acting erratically and was seen talking to himself.
“Shortly afterward, as he headed back to his assigned post, Nyambe fired two rounds into the air before fatally shooting himself under the jaw,” the sources revealed.
Police officers from Livingstone Central Police Station recovered the body and the AK-47 rifle used in the suicide.
The motive for the suicide remains unknown at this time as investigations are ongoing.
