Socialist Party -SP- General Secretary Cosmas Musumali says it is saddening that Zambia has a ruling party, United Party for National Development-UPND, which is doing atrocities without being challenged.
Speaking to journalists after a candid meeting with the Electoral Commission of Zambia – ECZ, Dr. Musumali said it is in public domain that the UPND meted out violence against his party during the recently held by-elections.
He said the nation was informed about UPND abducting SP Candidates.
Dr. Musumali said the party also highlighted pervasive corruption that goes on in the Electoral Process including the use of public resources and vehicles during campaigns.
The SP General Secretary said the actions undermine the credibility of the Electoral Process.
Dr. Musumali said the opportunity his party was given on Wednesday to speak to the ECZ over such violations is welcome because Zambia has General Elections in 2026.
He said there is need to put heads together to continue with dialogues, hoping to resolve some of the challenges before the General Elections.
And Electoral Commission of Zambia – ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis thanked the SP for accepting to meet with ECZ.
Ms Zaloumis said the exercise is part of ECZās multi-stakeholder engagement, starting with parties that participate in the Electoral Process.
She said the move was necessitated by the many letters that ECZ has received from SP about the conduct of elections.
The ECZ Commissioner said the Commission held a candid discussion with the SP that presented issues that they feel should be attended to which the Commission took note of.
Ms Zaloumis said issues that her Commission can deal with regarding the conduct of elections were noted adding that legal issues that ECZ cannot change were explained to SP that there are legal provisions constraints.
This is contained in a statement issued by SP Director Media, Brian Hapunda.
