MUFULIRA/ LIVINGSTONE – Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Mufulira has uncovered a trend where suppliers of narcotic and psychotropic substances are enlisting children to distribute drugs with the aim of avoiding detection and arrest.
DEC Mufulira officer-in-charge Precious Sakala revealed that minors are being coerced by drug dealers to serve as conduits for their illicit merchandise.
She was speaking in an interview with ZANIS following a public hearing convened by the Parliamentary Committee on Youth, Sport and Child Matters to address the escalating issue of drug abuse among young people in Mufulira last week.
“The suppliers know that children below 18 will not go to jail but just be diverted to social welfare or DEC for counselling, and so they are taking advantage to use them as drug suppliers,” Ms Sakala said.
