A 38-YEAR-OLD man of Zanimuone Township in Lusaka shocked the court when he said it was not true that he ran away after stealing a vest from Pep Stores but he instead simply walked home with the vest he had not paid for.

Patrick Maunga has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing the vest, which he later wore to the same store the next day.

On June 16, 2024, Maunga, a nail technician, went into Pep Stores and took a vest valued at K99.90, the property of Pep Stores.

Maunga told Livingstone Chief Resident Magistrate Kalifana Manyepa that he got the vest and knew what he was doing, admitting that he was not allowed to take it.

The court heard that Happy Munsaka, who complained on behalf of Pep Stores, saw Maunga entering Pep Stores around 12:00 hours and going to pick the vest and acting as if he wanted to pay but then ran away.

The court heard Maunga returned to the shop the second day wearing the same vest. He was approached and asked why he took the vest without paying for it.

He was later taken to the police, where he admitted the charge, and he was arrested formally.
