Chief Mailo of the Lala people of Serenje District, Central Province, says the Government is ready to support traditional ceremonies if organizing committees are well-organized.

The Traditional Leader observed that the Icibwelamushi Ceremony of the Lala, Bisa, and Swaka, which brings together 19 chiefs, is sometimes poorly organized compared to other ceremonies under a single Chief.

He emphasized that there should not be any breakaway ceremonies but that all should remain under Icibwelamushi.

Chief Mailo urged the Lalas not to abandon their culture in the wake of intercultural communication facilitated by social media.

He paid tribute to Journalist Bangwe Naviley Chisenga for writing books and singing songs in Lala for future generations to benefit.

The Traditional Leader made the remarks while officiating at a fundraising dinner organized by the Lala, Bisa, and Swaka (LABISWA) Association in Lusaka.

He noted that the coming together of the three tribes for a common purpose showed unity, which must be sustained.

Chief Mailo highlighted that the LABISWA landscape is blessed with tourist attractions such as Kasanka, Bangweulu Wetlands, Lavushimanda, and part of the South Luangwa National Parks, which can be harnessed to develop the area.

Meanwhile, LABISWA Chairperson Power Kunda urged Lalas, Bisas, and Swakas residing in urban areas to periodically connect their children to the region through regular visits.

And LABISWA Vice Chairperson Stella Mwape stressed the importance of education among those from LABISWA.
