At least ten people have died in a mining accident that occurred today at a mine pit in Mumbwa District, Central Province. Five others sustained injuries.
Central Province Commissioner of Police, Ms Charity Munganga, said an unknown number of people went to conduct mining activities at the pit this morning.
During the course of their activities, the earth collapsed on them.
Munganga reported that rescue efforts led to the recovery of six miners with injuries, while nine were confirmed dead on the spot.
One of the six injured miners later succumbed to his injuries at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
Efforts to rescue any remaining miners trapped in the debris are still underway.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Mumbwa General Hospital Mortuary, and the injured miners are currently receiving medical attention at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
Munganga stated that the Zambia Police Service, in collaboration with other relevant authorities, is working diligently to ascertain the exact number of people who were in the mine at the time of the accident and to provide assistance to those affected.F
