Lusaka-09/10/24-The current electricity crisis, characterized by prolonged periods of load shedding, is having profound and far-reaching negative effects on our environment. One of the most concerning outcomes is the increased reliance on unsustainable energy sources, particularly charcoal, which is exacerbating deforestation and contributing to climate change.

As Zambians turn to charcoal as an alternative fuel during electricity shortages, our forests are being depleted at an alarming rate. The unchecked cutting down of trees disrupts ecosystems, reduces biodiversity, and releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This, in turn, accelerates climate change, threatening the very balance of our natural environment. Forests play a critical role in absorbing carbon emissions, and their destruction weakens our ability to combat global warming.

Beyond environmental degradation, the reliance on charcoal and other unsustainable energy sources deepens poverty and hardship in communities, creating a vicious cycle. As trees are cleared, local ecosystems suffer, leading to long-term consequences for both the environment and the livelihoods of those who depend on natural resources.

The government’s struggle to resolve the electricity shortages only worsens the situation. Failing to address this crisis in a sustainable manner will further degrade our environment and stall our nation’s progress in the fight against climate change. Zambia cannot afford a “business-as-usual” approach. We urgently need a comprehensive, long-term strategy focused on sustainable energy solutions, reducing reliance on environmentally damaging alternatives like charcoal.

I, therefore, urge the Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, to take immediate and decisive action in resolving this electricity crisis. If necessary, the government should explore importing power to ensure stability. Zambia’s economy is heavily reliant on electricity, and delays in addressing this issue will only prolong the negative effects on both the environment and the livelihoods of our people.
The time to act is now, for the future of our country and our planet.

Signed,
