In Memory Of My Father Who Passed On 10 Years Ago.

As we celebrate his 10th Memorial, I reflected on some of the money lessons he taught me. I owe a lot of my “financial literacy” to dad.
Lesson 1. Be a cheerful giver.
When I was young, every time my dad gave me money, it was accompanied with a handwritten or signed “love letter” that always started with My Dear Stella and ended with Love, Dad.
I know most parents may give children money, be a cheerful giver (do not have angry/straight faces when giving). Try handwriting a note to your children the next time you give your children money. I don’t have that money today but I have the letters which make me think of how much love and thought he put into his giving.
Lesson 2. Money does not grow on trees 🫣😅 I still use this one.
One time while I was studying in Malaysia, I had ‘more month than money’ because I had overspent. I let the old man know I needed more money. His response: “Did you pay for accomodation for the month?”
Me: yes.
Him: “Okay. Well money does not grow on trees so you’re going to have to wait till next month and since you have paid for accomodation at least you have a place to sleep” 😅
Yikes. He sent me money three days later but from then on, I learnt to SAVE and not spend all my money so that I always have some money at the end of the month. 😅
Lesson 3. Invest in Education!
When I was about to turn 18, I wanted a car. There’s a specific $60, 000 car I wanted 🫣🙈😅. And being daddy’s little girl, I decided to ask. You never know, he could be feeling generous enough to give that day 😆. His response: ‘I would rather spend $60k on your studies.’ A few months later, I sent him an offer letter for a Masters Degree in the U.K. For that, he paid in full and asked what next?
My father spent a lot on my education that at the time of his death, I had completed my Masters Degree in International Financial Systems.
When I look at how expensive education is today, I thank God I got the education rather than the car.
10 years come and go by so fast, yet the lessons and memories remain.
