Peace Corps Zambia is proud to announce the swearing-in of 21 new volunteers who have successfully completed their intensive pre-service training. The ceremony, held today, marks the beginning of their two-year service in communities across Zambia, where they will work on health and education projects.
On August 26, Peace Corps Zambia welcomed 21 new volunteers, who have since been undergoing 11 weeks of pre-service training in various Zambian languages, technical skills, and cross-cultural understanding. As they prepare for their service, 15 of the Volunteers will serve as English teachers and peer educators in rural communities in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, six of these volunteers will be sworn in to work as community health volunteers in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. Community health volunteers support health interventions at the grassroots level and improve access to health education, sanitation, and disease prevention, particularly in areas like maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS awareness, and nutrition.
These dedicated volunteers join the long legacy of Peace Corps Zambia, which celebrates 30 years of partnership and friendship with the people of Zambia this year. The volunteers will be living and working alongside Zambian community members, promoting sustainable development, cultural exchange, and capacity building.
In his remarks, Peace Corps Zambia Country Director Tim Katz emphasized, “This group represents the spirit of partnership, resilience, and hope that defines the Peace Corps experience. We are excited for the positive impact they will make in the communities they will soon call home.” U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales officially swore in the 21 new volunteers telling them that “you will learn from the Zambians in your host communities, just as much as the community will learn from you. The bonds you form will be the true legacy of your service.”
The newly sworn-in volunteers will soon depart for their assigned sites across Zambia to begin their work in collaboration with local leaders and stakeholders.
Father Anthony Bwalya Tambatamba, Assistant Director for Teacher Education and Specialised Services from the Ministry of Education was the guest of honor at the ceremony.
