A 50-year-old man of P2 area in Mazabuka district has drowned in a canal belonging to Zambia Sugar Company while fishing.
He has been identified as Mabvuto Ngoma by his brother, Panganani Ngoma, who reported that the deceased drowned at Pump Station Number 2 around 11:30 hours on 24th January, 2025.
Confirming the development in a statement to Byta FM News, Southern Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, noted that the deceased and his brother had gone fishing.
Namalongo noted that while fishing, the deceased decided to cross over the canal by swimming to the other side where he thought he could catch more fish.
However, he was overpowered by the running water in the canal and drowned, with his young brother unable to help him because he could not swim due to the strong current.
Namalongo stated that Police and Fire Brigade Officers visited the scene where they instituted the search for the body in the canal, but by broadcast time, it was yet to be retrieved.
