…as Chiinda calls on sanitation company for quick action to avoid disease outbreak

By Francis Chipalo

RESIDENTS in Lusaka’s Chelstone Township have expressed worry with an alleged lack of action by the Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company (LWSC) to act on a reported sewer blockage that has affected some homes.

Harriet Mwanza of big market area whose yard is flooded with sewer complained to the media that the lack of action by the sanitation company to address the problem is a matter of serious concern.

Mwanza said despite reporting the matter, LWSC hasn’t taken time to visit the scene, adding that it has been over a month when she reported to the service provider.

She said the lack of action by the services company had put the lives of her family members at risk of contracting diseases in view of the rainy season, words echoed by another resident Helque Njobvu of small market area.

Njobvu equally described the matter as a serious health hazard.

“We have been reporting this matter but nothing is being done as the problem keeps on getting worse. We have kids please can something be done as you know that there is cholera,” she appealed.

And community leader Chrispin Chiinda has called for quick action from relevant authorities to avoid waterborne disease outbreak such as Cholera that has been reported in some areas.

Chiinda has urged the responsible public institutions to work on the sewer system in Chelstone as soon as possible before an outbreak of Cholera.

“The sad part is that even the road around small market has been damaged due to the continued flow of sewer water and if this problem is not attended to urgently, it will become worse. I am appealing to responsible offices to quickly act on this matter.

Meanwhile, Chiinda who was doing a routine community check discovered about five sewer blockages just within small and big market areas, further urging LWSC to be proactive by conducting inspections in order to serve residents better.

The aspiring member of parliament for Munali later on undertook a community cholera sensitization tour within Chelstone.
