A Catholic priest based in Italy has called on Zambia’s opposition political parties to unite in order to strengthen the country’s democracy.

Fr. Martin Mwango has observed with concern that the current fragmented state of the opposition is weakening their ability to provide effective checks and balances, which he says are essential in a functional democracy.

“The disjointed manner in which the opposition is conducting itself is detrimental to democracy,” he said, with a call on to address the leadership crisis which he described as too loud to ignore.

He clarified that his message was not politically motivated or driven by any patronage but rooted in the concern for a more organized and credible opposition that can contribute meaningfully to national governance.

Fr. Mwango has also raised alarm over what he described as a “leadership crisis” within the opposition, warning that the absence of a clear leadership roadmap does not inspire confidence or offer viable alternatives to the current administration.

He has since urged opposition leaders to put their house in order, by choosing leaders that are trustworthy and can compete democratically for the sake of preserving Zambia’s democracy through robust multiparty participation.

Fr Mwango says lack of a viable opposition presents a crisis to the electorate as they are denied an opportunity or chance to choose leaders of their choice.

“In 2021 the Zambian people voted overwhelmingly for an opposition political party then because it was concrete, intact and instilled confidence and hope”, he said, emphasizing the need for the same to continue under a united and well structured opposition.
