Prominent Constitutional Lawyer and Patriotic Front Presidential Aspirant Makebi Zulu has expressed deep concern over the failure of 154,373 candidates in the 2024 Primary School Examination.

He says it is unacceptable that such a large number of learners will not proceed to Form I, especially under a system that claims to offer free and inclusive education.

Mr Zulu questions how quality learning can take place in classrooms overcrowded with over 100 pupils, where teachers are overwhelmed and infrastructure is overstretched.

He was particularly disturbed by a Grade One pupil who said he arrives at school two hours early just to secure a seat, or else he stands throughout the day due to a class size of more than 120 learners.

He adds that the pupil’s exercise book had not been marked for weeks, a clear sign that teachers are unable to cope with the workload under current conditions.

Mr Zulu urged the government to focus on improving teacher-to-pupil ratios, classroom space, and learning materials to protect the future of Zambia’s children.

“To all the learners who didn’t make it, please don’t lose hope,” Mr Zulu said. “This is not the end, your dreams are still valid, and your journey continues.”

He also urged parents to speak to their children with compassion and encouragement, reminding them that failure is not final.

Mr Zulu congratulated all the pupils who passed, saying they have done well despite the odds, and their resilience must be celebrated.
