WILDLIFE OFFICERS ATTACKED IN SIKONGO DISTRICT

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the arrest of six individuals in Sikongo District for attacking Wildlife Police Officers.

In a statement, Saturday, the Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Nelly Banda, disclosed that the officers were ambushed while investigating illegal timber and poaching activities.

Banda explained that the suspects were armed with dangerous weapons and attempted to expel the officers from a protected area.

She revealed that one officer was assaulted and efforts were made to seize government firearms.

Banda confirmed that reinforcements were deployed, leading to the apprehension of the suspects.

She identified the arrested individuals as Mulimi Kabula, Mutusi Mundia, Moses Simakando, Njamba Sitali, Kailu Nasilele, and Namushi Namushi.

She further noted that one of the accused is an officer from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, alleged to be a ringleader.

The Principal Public Relations Officer clarified that the suspects face charges under the Penal Code and the Wildlife Act.

She assured the public that no suspect was mistreated during the operation or detention.

Banda stressed that all detainees were medically examined and their rights respected.

She warned that interfering with Wildlife Police Officers is a serious criminal offence.

The Principal Public Relations Officer condemned the spread of false information aimed at undermining lawful operations and reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to wildlife protection and sustainable tourism.
