PRESS STATEMENT
CRIMINAL TRESPASS – MATERO

February 26, 2026 – The Zambia Police Service, through Matero Police Station, received a report of criminal trespass on February 26, 2026, from Ms. Bernadette Mufalo, aged 50, of Lusaka, who is also the Head Teacher at Matero Secondary School.

Ms. Mufalo reported that a general worker at the school, identified as Mainza Makobela, aged 34, of Kasupe Area, Lusaka, had unlawfully climbed a communication tower erected within the school premises. The approximately 45-metre tower is property of Infratel.

Makobela was found seated at the apex of the structure.

Brief facts of the matter indicate that Makobela has been employed as a general worker at the school for 12 years.

It is alleged that recently he had been collecting money from members of the public while purporting to act as a real estate agent.

Additionally, he reportedly had disputes with several teachers at the institution.

These complaints were brought to the attention of the Head Teacher, who cautioned him on several occasions.

Due to alleged misconduct and failure to amend his behaviour, the school administration resolved not to renew his contract, which was due to expire on February 27, 2026. He was informed accordingly.

On February 26, 2026, at around 06:00 hours, the Head Teacher discovered Makobela climbing the tower and immediately reported the matter to the police.

Officers, together with the Fire Brigade, responded promptly and found him seated at the apex of the tower, demanding to be addressed by relevant authorities.

Following coordinated efforts, officers successfully brought him down safely.

Mainza Makobela has since been detained in police custody for criminal trespass.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
