The Government of Zambia has received a K2.6 million insurance payout from ZSIC General Insurance Limited to support the rehabilitation of the roof at the National Heroes Stadium.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis C. Nkandu, described the development as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore and modernise the country’s premier sports facility. He noted that the stadium remains a critical national asset, playing a vital role in sports development and the promotion of national unity.

Nkandu explained that while progress has been made—such as the successful installation of a hybrid playing surface—the repair of the damaged roof is essential for the stadium to resume hosting competitive matches. He further clarified that delays in commencing the rehabilitation works were due to the insurance claims process, emphasizing the need for timely processing to ensure swift restoration of public infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of ZSIC General Insurance Limited, Trevor Jengajenga, said the payout underscores the company’s commitment to safeguarding national assets and supporting national development. He revealed that the damage to the stadium roof resulted from severe storm winds in separate incidents and confirmed that the funds—covering both materials and installation—have already been transferred to the Ministry.

Jengajenga also disclosed that the company paid out over K500 million in claims in 2025 across various sectors, highlighting its financial strength and reliability.

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the National Heroes Stadium is fully rehabilitated to meet both national and international standards. The Ministry indicated that works on the roof are expected to commence soon, paving the way for the eventual reopening of the facility to the public.

The statement was issued by Nchimunya Bobby Ng’andu, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts.
