The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority –ZICTA-has shut down four radio stations on the Copperbelt for causing interference to aircraft communication and navigation systems.

ZICTA Corporate Communications Manager Hanford Chaaba says that the regulatory action follows technical assessments conducted jointly with the Zambia Civil aviation authority.

Mr. Chaaba said the investigations revealed that some radio stations were transmitting out-of-band signals, including harmonics and intermodulation products, which extended beyond their assigned frequencies in the FM broadcasting band.

He said these emissions were interfering with frequencies used for air navigation, posing a risk to aircraft and the lives of people on board.

Mr. Chaaba added that the affected stations will only be allowed to resume operations once they fully comply with regulatory requirements.
