Zambian sprinter Kennedy Luchembe has delivered an outstanding performance in Djibouti, winning a gold medal in the 400m at an international competition held as part of preparations for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Luchembe clocked an impressive 46.73 seconds to claim first place, beating strong competitors from Burkina Faso and the host nation, Djibouti. The event brought together 15 African countries, providing a valuable platform for high-level competition and performance assessment as athletes intensify preparations for major international assignments.

The Zambian sprinter was visibly emotional on the podium as the Zambian National Anthem was played, describing the moment as a proud and unforgettable achievement.

Speaking to the NOCZ Media Team following his victory, Luchembe expressed satisfaction with his progress and confidence in his journey towards Glasgow 2026.

He said he was encouraged by his improvement and believes the team is moving in the right direction, adding that although preparations started late due to unavoidable circumstances, the progression remains positive, and he expects to be in top shape by the time the Commonwealth Games begin.

Luchembe is expected to return to Zambia on Sunday afternoon, as preparations continue for upcoming competitions on the road to Glasgow 2026.
