Police in Katete District, Eastern Province, have launched a manhunt for three men accused of raping a 21-year-old woman after allegedly ambushing her as she returned home from a grinding mill.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident in a statement issued to TV Yatu, stating that the victim was attacked while pushing her bicycle along a footpath after suffering a puncture.

Victim Allegedly Dragged into Bush

According to police, the woman had gone to a grinding mill (commonly known as chigayo) to process sunflower into cooking oil when she encountered three men identified only as Levison, Kele and Tele, with other names unknown.

Police said the suspects allegedly grabbed the woman and dragged her into nearby bushes, where they reportedly took turns assaulting her.

Suspects Allegedly Stole Victim’s Property

After the alleged assault, the suspects are said to have robbed the victim of personal belongings, including her footwear and a chitenge material.

“The alleged suspects also got away with her chitenge material, red/white and black in colour, also her yellow tropicals (slippers),” Commissioner Mweemba stated.

Commissioner Mweemba said the incident occurred on Sunday around 21:00 hours but was reported to Katete Police Station the following day.

The victim was taken to a clinic and later obtained a medical report form from police.

Police Appeal for Public Help
