Lusaka Press Club President Edward Roy Makayi says press freedom is inseparable from peace, human rights, and national development.

In a World Press Freedom Day statement, Makayi saluted journalists who uphold truth “often under challenging circumstances.”

“A free press is not merely a privilege for journalists; it is a cornerstone of every democratic society,” he said.

Makayi has since called for protection of media freedoms and safety for journalists to operate without fear or censorship.

Makayi urged the media to champion ethical journalism, saying truth and justice build lasting peace.

The Lusaka press club joined other media bodies and journalists in celebrating this year’s press day under the theme; “Shaping a future at peace: Promoting press freedom for human rights, development and security”.
