The New Heritage Party (NHP) says it is not contesting the August 2026 elections, opting instead to focus on uniting opposition parties to unseat the UPND and establish a Government of National Unity.

Party Presisident resident Chishala Kateka said the party spent the last three years working behind the scenes to bring together the United Kwacha Alliance, United Front, We’re One Zambia Alliance, and efforts for a single opposition candidate.

Kateka explained that the aim was to rally the opposition around a national restoration program and form a broad-based government.

She claimed Zambia is at risk of becoming a failed state due to what she called the UPND’s “incompetence and divisive practices.”

Kateka also criticized successive governments, including the current administration, for prioritizing retribution over development, and cited rising poverty and cost of living as evidence of policy failure.

Kateka added that the NHP will not support the UPND and will work with the opposition to remove it while pushing for policies centered on national transformation.
