Zambia Environmental Management Agency ZEMA is consulting with stakeholders on the possibility of phasing out Doom pesticide and other hazardous chemicals from the Zambian market.
Speaking in an interview with Diamond news ZEMA Public Relations Manager, Friday Phiri says 20 substances including DDT and Mercury have already been listed for phase out and consultations with stake holders to ban the importation and sale of doom have also reached an advanced stage.
Mr. Phiri says the Agency notes with concern the high levels of abuse on doom as a suicide substance despite regulations that have been put in place on the sale hence the decision.
Mr. Phiri says the whole purpose of sale of doom is to be used as a pesticide as opposed to what is being seen in some section of society.
