Historian Euston Chiputa says the adoption of Swahili as an official language for the African region may come with its own challenges to other countries in the region.

At the recently held African Union Assembly of heads of state and government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Swahili was adopted as the official working language for the bloc.

Reacting to this development, Dr. Chiputa, a Lecturer at the school of humanities and social sciences in the department of history at the University of Zambia says with Zambia sharing borders with countries Congo DRC and Tanzania were Swahili is used in trade and business, it will help break communication barriers.

Dr. Chiputa however says the responsibility now remains to individual countries to put certain policies in place to allow citizens to learn Swahili especially that it is perceived to be a very difficult
language to learn.
