Amending the constitution amidst presseing national matters NIKUPUSA – Njobvu

Ackim Antony Njobvu, President of the Democratic Union (DU), has expressed strong opposition to the government’s proposed constitutional reforms, describing the process as rushed, lacking transparency, and potentially driven by hidden motives.

Njobvu questions the timing and budgeting of the reform process, emphasizing that it wasn’t part of the national budget and lacks clear financial planning

Some of the concerns Njobvu raised include lack of Transparency, saying the process should be initiated by citizens, not the executive branch, to ensure transparency and inclusivity.

Njobvu also questions where the resources for the reform process will come from, given that it wasn’t budgeted for, and highlights the potential strain on government resources from creating 91 new constituencies.

The outspoken leader has urged the government to address pressing issues like the energy crisis, fuel shortages, and economic challenges instead of focusing on constitutional amendments.

Njobvu has accused the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of manipulating national institutions to advance their political agenda, further calling for a citizen-driven process, suggesting that the government should restart the process after the general elections to ensure a transparent and inclusive approach.

Njobvu says amending the constitution at a time like this amounts to nothing, but stupidty (Kupusa).

The oppostion leader made the remarks during an interview on Pan African Radio.
