Breakout broadcaster and journalist Amina Kaunda has been shortlisted for the 2022 BBC Komla Dumor Award. This comes after the BBC received and screened thousands of applications from journalists across the African continent.

In an email on Thursday 3 March 2022, the BBC said it was pleased to inform Ms Kaunda that she has been shortlisted and will proceed to the next stage of evaluation.

Ms. Kaunda becomes the first Zambian to make the shortlist to this prestigious award.
Upon learning of her selection, Ms Kaunda expressed excitement and disbelief because even though she applied with all of her best intentions, she feared the worst. “Never listen to that voice of doubt in your head” she said. “You are worthy of your dreams”.
Ms Kaunda is well known for her big voice and prowess on the popular news channel Spring TV and will now be a familiar face on the Diamond TV news desk.

About the Award

The BBC World News Komla Dumor Award was instituted to honour Komla Dumor, “an exceptional Ghanaian broadcaster and presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014”. He was the main presenter of the BBC World News programme ‘Focus on Africa.’

The Award is presented each year “to an outstanding individual living and working in Africa, who combines strong journalism skills, on-air flair, and an exceptional talent in telling African stories with the ambition and potential to become a star of the future.”

The winner will receive a three-month training and development contract with BBC News, and will have the opportunity to “travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that they have researched, with the report broadcast to the BBC’s global audiences”.
