A 9-year-old boy from Lubanda village in Itezhi-Tezhi district has died after allegedly being assaulted by his biological mother.
On 1st July 2026, the boy had left home around 13:00 hours to play with friends and only returned home shortly after midnight.
According to the mother’s account, the child returned home with visible bruises and reportedly informed her that he had been beaten by unknown persons.
He was taken to Lubanda Health Centre at around 07:00 hours on 2nd July 2026 for medical attention but was pronounced dead around 09:30 hours while receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, police officers who inspected the boy’s remains observed deep bruises on both buttocks, the back and both hands, as well as swelling of the left palm.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, says contrary to initial assertions, the child’s injuries were inflicted on him by his 26-year-old mother after he returned home late.
Namalongo notes that police later recovered an axe handle and broken sticks believed to have been used in the alleged assault.
He says the suspect is detained in lawful police custody as investigations into the matter are ongoing.
