A bus conductor has been crushed to death in a tragic accident along Kafue Road.

Zambia Police spokesperson GODFREY CHILABI confirmed in a statement that the incident occurred on March 31, 2026, around 14:30 hours, near Grandview School in Shimabala.

Mr. CHILABI said a Toyota Hiace minibus (public service vehicle) with registration BAJ 6781, driven by 33-year-old AMOS PHIRI, was heading towards Kafue when the accident took place.

The driver had initially passed a group of potential passengers but later stopped and began reversing towards them.

At that moment, the bus conductor ABRAHAM NKHATA, 27, disembarked from the vehicle and moved to the rear to assist.

Unaware of his presence, Mr. PHIRI continued reversing and struck Mr. NKHATA, causing severe head injuries.

Mr. NKHATA was rushed to Kafue District General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Mr. CHILABI said the minibus has since been impounded, and Mr. PHIRI is currently in police custody.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Kafue District Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
