A 45-YEAR-OLD businessman of Chinsali, Muchinga Province, has committed suicide by taking some chemical after he allegedly assaulted his wife.
The man, identified as Geoffrey Sinkala, committed suicide on Friday after he allegedly hit his wife, Gloria Nankamba, 40, with a hammer on her head.
The couple is said to have been married for some time but they have been having marital problems, which led to the husband asking the wife to move out of their shared home on Thursday.
Sinkala also got his wife’s clothes and locked them in his bedroom before Nankamba left for Isoka.
However, the wife returned home the following day around 11:00 hours so that she could see her children.
The wife proceeded to her daughter’s bedroom, where she slept before her husband arrived home and chased all the children from the room before locking it.

Muchinga Province police commanding officer Paul Achiume said Sinkala allegedly got a machete and attempted to hit the wife, who managed to grab it and throw it away.
Mr Achiume said Sinkala later got a hammer and hit his wife on the right and left side of the head and on the forehead.
“The husband also hit his wife with a pressing iron on the head which caused her to collapse before he went and locked himself in the bedroom,” he said.
Mr Achiume said a concerned member of the public phoned the police and reported the assault case.
He said police officers rushed to the scene and found the wife unconscious while the husband was still locked in the room.
Mr Achiume said the officers knocked on the door but there was no response, which made them to break the door and found Sinkala on the floor with a bottle containing a certain chemical in his hands.
Police also found the hammer, machete and two beer bottles at the scene before the couple were rushed to Chinsali District Hospital.
He said the wife sustained cuts on the right and left sides of the head with a swollen face and is currently receiving treatment.
However, Sinkala died on Saturday while receiving treatment.
