The ruling party’s Presidential Support System has called on the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) to protect consumers from being exploited by the business community with unfair prices.

And the ruling UPND says it is elated with reports from Livingston where mealie meal prices are reportedly to have gone down.

According to reports coming from the tourist capital, a 25Kg bag of the country’s staple food is now fetching between K350 to K300 depending on the brand from the previous K400.

Speaking at a media briefing, Monday morning, Presidential Support System media director Frank Bwalya said the ruling party expect other regions to reduce prices of essential commodities like mealie meal.

With the country having produced a bumper harvest in the 2024/2025 farming season, Bwalya said producers should consider reducing prices of essential goods in the country.

Also citing a reduction in fuel prices and specifically diesel, Bwalya said it would be prudent for the business community to consider reducing prices of goods.

“We know that producers may not do so unless civil society organizations and relevant authorities do more and see to it that producers reduce prices of goods so that our people are not exploited,” Bwalya said.

Bwalya has since appealed to CCPC to engage the business community and protect consumers from being exploited, adding that Zambians should feel the impacts and strides being made in reducing the cost of living in the country.

CCPC is one institution that regulates the Zambian economy to avoid among others, restrictive business practices as well as enhancement of consumer welfare.
